General
How quickly will I hear back from you?
When you initially reach out, you will nearly always hear from us within one business day, often sooner.
What are your hours?
How are services being offered at Resilient Self Therapy?
We have in person availability at both our New York City and Hudson Valley offices. Our Union Square office is within walking distance of Greenwich Village, The East Village, Gramercy Park, Flatiron, Chelsea, NoHo & SoHo. Our Kingston office is within driving distance of Catskill, Rhinebeck, Saugerties, Woodstock, Stone Ridge, Rosendale, Highland and New Paltz. Additionally we provide high quality, empathic care via a HIPAA compliant Teletherapy platform to anyone who resides in the state of New York.
Do I have to live in the same state where my therapist is licensed?
Due to telehealth regulations and state licensing requirements, therapists can only provide services to people who are physically located (at the time of the session) in the state where they’re licensed. So if you’re a NJ or CT resident for example, but are interested in attending your sessions in person at either of our locations, we would be able to work with you. If you’re a student in NY but return to another state during school breaks, we would need to pause therapy during that time.
If I’m a current or former client, can I refer someone to you?
Please do! Our practice thrives on word of mouth referrals and they are one of the most significant gestures of the high quality work that we do.
I’m a parent, seeking a therapist for my child or teen. Can you help with this?
The clinical team at Resilient Self Therapy works exclusively with people who are 18 years old and above. If you are looking to get support for your child or teen, we may be able to assist with a referral to trusted colleagues who have specialized training and experience in this area. We also know how hard it is to parent when worried about your child and are available to help directly if you’d like some additional support for yourself in this area of your life.
Who should I talk to about questions that I have about billing, forms, the client portal?
Therapy
How do I find the right therapist?
One of the greatest indicators of success in therapy is the relationship that you have with your therapist. While theoretical orientation, postgraduate training, niche, and years in practice are important, it often comes down to “the goodness of fit” between a therapist and a client that is the most essential component to healing. You are also welcome to reach back out to our clinical director for a re-match.
How do we get started and what does a first session look like?
The first step is a 15-minute intro call with our Clinical Director who will take the time to assess what’s prompting you to reach out, gauge your scheduling and financial needs, answer any questions that you may have and pair you with the person on our team who is best suited to help. During that conversation we’ll either get you set up with your first appointment or provide a referral if we deem RST to be a poor fit for your needs. There will be some forms to complete ahead of your intake appointment, which you will receive via our HIPAA secure portal. At your intake appointment, your therapist will work to understand what’s motivating you to seek help, help you identify what successful treatment would look like for you, and begin to establish rapport. You can share what you feel compelled to share. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to talk about. You may at the end of the session feel an immediate ‘yes’ inside and wish to schedule another appointment. Or you may want to take some time to think about it. Either way is fine. It can sometimes take a few sessions to decide if you wish to commit to weekly sessions. It’s a unique relationship and making sure it’s a good fit is important.
How often will we meet?
At a minimum, sessions are once per week. It can also be beneficial to meet twice per week as this creates increased continuity and momentum of your work. We do not start with new clients on an every other week frequency, though sometimes after initial symptoms are reduced or some treatment goals have been met, we can discuss reducing the frequency of sessions.
How long is a session?
For individual therapy, an initial consultation is 1 hour and ongoing individual therapy sessions are 45 minutes. For couples therapy, an initial consultation is 90 minutes and ongoing couple’s sessions are 1 hour.
How long will therapy take?
The length of time that someone stays in treatment is unique and depends on factors such as what’s bringing you in as well as what your personal goals are. We believe that the decision to end treatment can be made collaboratively between you and your therapist, however, ultimately the choice to stop is yours.
Is therapy confidential?
Mostly, yes! We like to be very transparent about the instances in which we are required by law to break confidentiality. If you are at serious risk of harming yourself or someone else or if there is suspected abuse or neglect, we are not able to keep that a secret. If you would like for us to collaborate with another medical professional or another person, we have a Release of Information form for you to sign that grants permission to share information dictated by you.
Therapy just seems like a whole lot of work, is it?
It absolutely is and we’re here for all of it. Therapy takes a lot of effort, emotional bandwith, and the work that you put into it impacts what you get out of it. We believe in the transformational power of therapy and that you’re worth it. It’s common to feel a bit daunted by therapy, or even frustrated with the process at times. The thing is, what we also believe is that the courage that it takes to show up in therapy is always worth the alternative, having any regret over not having shown up enough for yourself, your relationships, or your life.

Insurance
Do you accept insurance?
We are not currently an in-network provider with any health insurance plans. If you have out of network benefits, we are able to help you in deciding if using out of network benefits is a good option for you. If so, we can provide the documentation necessary to submit claims for payment reimbursement.
How do Out of Network insurance benefits work?
When you use your out of network benefits for treatment at Resilient Self Therapy, you pay for sessions along the way and then submit claims to your insurance company at the end of each month, requesting reimbursement. Our administrative assistant will provide monthly superbills with all of the information needed to submit your claim. If you are unfamiliar with this process, we would be happy to orient you further and/or answer any questions that you may have. In the unlikely event that your insurance company denies your claim, you are responsible for the cost of the sessions that have occurred to date.
How do you know if I can use my insurance?
- Does my plan cover services for out-of-network mental health providers?
- What is the deductible I have to meet before reimbursement can occur?
- What percentage of treatment do I pay for when seeing an out-of-network mental health provider?
- Does my plan reimburse for telehealth (both audio and visual) sessions?
- Is it the calendar year that is used to de-mark coverage periods or another time specifier?
- Which form do I use to submit a claim and where can that form be found? Is it the CMS-1500 form?
- What mailing address do I send claim submissions to and/or is there an online portal that I can use to submit claims?
